Fight Night II Hits Outlaws Boxing Club

Amateur boxers across Southern California compete at Fight Night Oct. 16.

TARZANA, CA – October 10, 2005:  The best of Southern California’s amateur boxers will fight to win during open sparring matches at Outlaw’s Boxing Club’s Fight Night II, the second dynamic in-house exhibition where amateurs test their endurance and boxing skills, each in three two-minute rounds in front of judges and spectators.  Fight Night II happens on Sunday, October 16, at noon at Outlaws Boxing Club in Tarzana.

The first fight night, on August 26, attracted a full house of spectators, filling the gym with partisan cheers and excitement.  The atmosphere of intense fights, camera flashes, rings of the bell and a ring girl transformed the gym into the center of attention in the plaza.

The contenders fight with integrity and energy, using instinct and preparation to deliver instant reflexes and strategic combinations.  Every moment after the contenders leave their red or blue corners is unpredictable.  “They’re anticipating and countering every move, and taking advantage of any moment the opponent drops his focus,” said Darren Mitchell, manager of Outlaws Boxing Club.   “A comeback can make everyone change his mind on who is going to win in an instant.”

“These fights are important for the boxers to achieve the mental fitness that they can only get from fighting opponents,” said Mitchell.  “No matter how much they learn from trainers, they’re always learning from and adapting to their opponents in the ring.”

It’s No Contest - Fight Night Is a Hit at Outlaws Boxing Club

A full house watches Average Joes combat in the ring on Friday Fight Night.

TARZANA, CA – August 26, 2005:  Jabs, hooks and uppercuts landed as Average Joes fought to win during Outlaw’s Boxing Club’s Friday Fight Night, a dynamic in-house exhibition in which everyday people test their boxing skills in three two-minute rounds in front of judges and spectators.

Passionate cheers filled the Club as spectators cheered for their favorites and trainers shouted instruction into the ring.  The gym’s dynamic atmosphere of intense fights, camera flashes and rings of the bell attracted a full house and a crowd sneaking a peek at the door.

Some fighters are amateur boxers, laced with professional boxing gear, who aspire to become professional boxers, and a few are beginners, who only began training a few months ago.  “Their levels of skill, speed and endurance vary, but all of them give their best in the ring,” said Darren Mitchell, owner and manager of Outlaws Boxing Club.

The contenders fight with integrity and energy, using instinct and preparation to deliver instant reflexes and strategic combinations.  Every moment after the contenders leave their red or blue corners is unpredictable.  “They’re anticipating and countering every move, and taking advantage of any moment the opponent drops his focus,” said Mitchell.

“Boxing is a craft to be mastered.  It takes time to learn,” said Mitchell.

Outlaws Boxing Club Champions Boxing as an Art Form

Under new management, everyday people are defending the title of boxing as a martial art.

TARZANA, CA – August 19, 2005:  “Outlaws is revitalizing the image of boxing as a martial art,” said Darren Mitchell, new owner and manager of Outlaws Boxing Club in Southern California.

“Many boxing gyms align with the commercial gym membership mentality, spotlighting physical fitness as the key benefit of boxing,” said Mitchell.  “Sometimes, people forget that boxing is a martial art in addition to a competitive sport and a foundation for self-defense,” said Mitchell.  “It’s based on strategic, controlled uses of power to effectively strike or defend against the opponent, like other forms of martial arts.”

Boxing is about making every movement count, whether it’s a jab, hook or combination.  The challenge comes from the understanding of rhythm, timing, distance, balance and sophisticated footwork.  “It is difficult to learn, but once you master it, you achieve not only maximum physical fitness, but also a better sense of rhythm and coordination, discipline and self-confidence,” said Mitchell.

“Boxing emphasizes strategy in addition to power, challenging mind and body fitness,” said Mitchell.  “You’re constantly assessing the environment and anticipating your opponent's moves.”

“Your emotions and love for boxing get you into the ring, but it’s your skill that gets you out the winner,” said Mitchell.  “Every movement is disciplined and strategic, and emotions turn into energy and passion for the sport.”

Under Mitchell’s new management, more everyday people are turning to boxing at Outlaws to learn how to fight, “mostly because of positive word-of-mouth,” said Mitchell.  Outlaws diverse clientele includes families, students, professional boxers and an increasing number of women – all ranging from 12-years-old to 50-years-old.  “Before only a couple of females came to Outlaws - now they’re about 10 percent of Outlaws’s clients,” said Mitchell.  According to Mitchell, he expects ratio for male-female to increasingly change in favor of more women due to the new, less-intimidating attitude.

After remodeling the gym and the program, Outlaws provides a comfortable, collaborative environment for clients to engage in a complex martial art form.

Outlaws incorporates a personalized approach with open gym hours and afternoon classes, providing training with top industry trainers with over 50 years combined experience.  Classes and advanced personal training cater to people from every single level of boxing, from beginners to professional boxers.

Outlaws’ trainers specialize in different areas, such as power, speed and agility.  Together, their skills combine to offer clients the optimum training experience.

“The client experience at Outlaws is different than getting gym memberships and never going, or pacing on a treadmill,” said Mitchell.  “There’s much more value in a program that provides training.”  When clients come into Outlaws, trainers and fellow Club members are present to train and encourage them.  “They’re pushed to the limit every time they’re there,” said Mitchell.

“Before, learning to box was a solo sport; now it’s a team effort,” said Mitchell.  “It’s called a ‘club’ - everyone knows everybody and they help each other learn and get in shape.”

A new feature Outlaws Boxing Club will offer beginning August 26 is Friday Fight Night, a dynamic in-house exhibition in which regular Joes test their boxing skills in three two-minute rounds in front of judges and spectators.
